Country Walks Near Baltimore
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (May, 1993)
Author: Alan Fisher
Average review score:

Excellent source for the urban outdoor enthusiast
This book takes you to outdoor areas mostly within thirty minutes drive from downtown Baltimore. If you just need a breath of fresh air and a walk in the country to boost you up, this one is for you. This book is a great find for those Baltimorans who have lived here forever and never knew about these places. It is also great for all those newly transplanted to Baltimore. Mr. Fisher gives detailed descriptions of the areas and interesting historical tidbits. He knows his stuff. However, as he admits, the areas he describes are constantly changing. They are parks that are being renovated, adding new facilities, etc. ONe of our favorites is North Point State Park. If it weren't for this book, we would have never found it.

Crime and Punishment in Early Maryland (Criminology, Law Enforcement, and Social Problems, No 110)
Published in Hardcover by Patterson Smith (June, 1970)
Author: Raphael Semmes
Average review score:

A real find
An excellent treatise of life in early Maryland, primarily during the 17th and 18th century. A terrific book for anyone writing about that period, novel or non-fiction. Also a real find if your family came from Maryland and you are looking for genealogical traces. It is amazing that this book is still available, but it is, and thank goodness for that! A great book for students of early criminology in the colonies.

Day Trips in Delmarva

An idispensable guide
This is a superb guide and indispensable if you live in the area or plan to visit. The history and lore of each area is wonderfully brought out which entices one to explore further. Indeed, this book is as much a history as travel guide. Which is not to say it lacks anything as a straight-forward travel directory. The maps are useful and well drawn. The directions and road guides are carefully constructed with day itinerary's and helpful suggestions. Cautions such as advising against walking tours in marsh areas during hunting season, for example, are especially useful. I can't imagine a better wrought guide and, for the record, I have no connection with the author or publisher.

Down the Ocean: Postcards from Maryland and Delaware Beaches
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (March, 1999)
Author: Bert Smith
Average review score:

Down the Ocean
A thoroughly enjoyable book, especially for those familiar with Ocean City, MD and the Delaware beaches. Every summer these beaches swell to the sizes of large cities with visitors looking for sun and relaxation by the Atlantic. "Down the Ocean" takes you back, in picture postcards, to a time when these beaches were just gaining their popularity. Early hotels are shown in their heyday. There are views of the Boardwalks and of people in the sun bathing outfits of the early 1900's. I had so much fun with this book I finished it in one sitting and would highly recommend it to others!

The Fells Point History - Baltimore's Historic Port
Norman G. Rukert, the late and great Baltimore historian and business leader, has revealed a great chapter in Baltimore's and the America's history of commerical and naval exploits. His indepth research opened my eyes to Baltimore's role in creating the young American navy. This book also reveals how Baltimore became to be a flourishing city due to its position as "The Gateway to the South". If one wishes to study the history of Baltimore or the history of seafaring/privateers...I can recommend no other book than this.
